Photographer, Steve Steckly and girlfriend, Michael-Anne.

I enjoy this picture b/c it is a Polaroid, thus making it one of kind, and also b/c it is attributed to neither Steve nor myself. I believe it could only ever be attributed to our collective love of making photographs…indeed, it makes me think of the practice of working for works sake, even if often an abstraction, is wonderful and something to remind one self of from time to time.

I wish to continue the theme of August and giving mention to photographers doing work I’m impressed with. Richard Burbridge (w/ Art and Commerce) is another name I get excited to see in the by-line. Mainly b/c the guy can light, and lighting that is both creative and proficient seems a bit rare these days. This spread is from Another Magazine.

(On a complete tangent, you can see by the watermark that I pulled the jpegs from Art and Commerce’s website. I’m always surprised when big reps have lousy scans covered with watermarks on their sites.)

Sebastião Salgado is one of the preeminent photojournalists working today. Well, photojournalist may not be the best moniker for him, since as far as I know he only works on long term, large scale projects that he dedicates himself to for years. This sort of dedication and ethic is, needless to say, tremendously admirable. Furthermore, and also tremendously admired, are Salgado’s prints: they are so exquisite it’s almost unreal.

Take a close look at this first photo. It is the kind of picture that can change your perception of the function and capability of photography.

Mert and Marcus (w/ Art Partner) rarely produce anything but noteworthy and well realized fashion stories. They dabble in some celebrity portraits, but I liken them more to Meisel and those few others who are thoroughbred fashion shooters, photographing clothes really really well w/o the all too common pretensions of fine art or books or gallery shows. This seemingly, but all but so, simple concentration is something I admire. The photos here, from Mert and Marcus’ “Into the Woods” story in W (Aug 07), are an example of this exemplary work.

For me, these are the sort of photographs that exude an uncompromising method; you can see the effort on all fronts that went into making them this good.

This matters.

Today, for some reason out of the blue, I recalled how inspired I was years ago by Paolo Roversi’s picture of Laeticia Casta for Alberta Ferretti’s Fall/Winter 2003 line. It is one of few images that literally influenced me to pursue fashion photography. I – even after becoming horrendously bitter – still think this picture is nearing perfect.
