  3. Hello Graeme,
First off, I’d like to say that your work and website are absolutely amazing! It’s great to have photographers like you on the web, I come here time and again for a breath of fresh air and a spark of inspiration to get my creative juices flowing 8^) My favorite shot in this NYC journal is (picture #7) of the lady reaching into her bag with her hat hiding her identity. Awesome capture! I just was wondering, did you dodge and burn the outline of her hat to give it that “aura” effect? Or is that just the characteristics of Rodinal? Keep up the great work!

  4. Nice, Mike, thanks for the good words.

Rodinal has that characteristic on it’s own to an extent if it’s used in specific ways. Then I often take the neg further in that direction through dodging and burning or other techniques to accentuate it (as in the picture you’re referring to).

Rodinal is only one road to get a look like this though. It is achievable w/ many other developers and films. Just gotta learn to bend them to your idea.

  5. Cool,
Thanks for replying. I’ve read elsewhere that it is called the mackie effect? Something to do with agitation? Not sure. but I’m going to switch to rodinal from d76 (with tri-x of course) only because every time I see this combo it just grabs me for some reason. I know there will be a learning curve but I can’t wait to give it a try.
    Thanks again,
    MIKE

  6. Have fun playing w/ it Mike. I used Rodinal and TX for everything I shot for 3 years, and thus learned it well. It’s capable.
